Historical Maps

Historical maps give an indication of the layout of an area at a previous time. If you want to learn about the history of an area, historical maps can be a valuable resource. The UK is divided into local authorities; these are areas of major cities and counties.

Where can I find old maps?

Both physical and digital historical maps are held in many places:

  • Maps of a particular area will be held locally by each local authority.
  • You can search the indexes on the Familia website to look at the holdings of a particular local authority.
  • You can also view old maps of various places in the UK for free by visiting www.old-maps.co.uk and looking at their digital historical map of Britain, with maps from the 1800s.
  • The Genmaps website holds a links to a good collection of maps of England, Scotland and Wales. The maps date from the 14th century to the 20th century.
  • Many national libraries may also hold old maps available for viewing.
